While the specifics may change between issues, we plan to include the following in each:

  1. How Pocket Birds works and how to share your creations
  2. A personal note from Andy about the bird.
  3. A list of books, movies, videos, essays, and other media that features the bird.
  4. A list of similar birds in your area if you can't find the exact species the issue is about.

  11. A list of common birding resources on the back cover.
  12. Finally, we'll have 5-6 pieces of unique artwork of the issue's bird throughout.

What birds will you cover?

Hopefully all of them! But we will start with some common and uncommon birds in North America and birds that mean something to us. For instance, the Carolina Wren, Osprey, and Black Capped Chickadee are all common birds we love, and the Tawny Frogmouth, Nightjar, American Woodcock, Common Loon, and Great Horned Owl are amazing! Don't even get us started on all the amazing warblers out there.

And yes I'd love to cover the Shoebill Stork at some point. Oh and all the crazy ducks and waterfowl! And raptors! Have you seen a Greater Prairie-Chicken? Wild. There are so many awesome birds to cover.

The first 6 issues will cover a bird from each of the following categories

  • Songbirds
  • Raptors
  • Waterfowl & Shorebirds
  • Insectivores & Ground Birds
  • Wading Birds
  • Seabirds

We will poll our subscribers to help us choose the birds you want to see next.

Why only one bird each issue?

Multiple reasons.

  • We wanted to slow it all down. We live in a world filled with infinite choices and options, and this our attempt at focusing on just one thing at a time.
  • We love writing and publishing small, staple bound zines. Something that arrives in the mail, brings some excitement, doesn't ask a lot of your time to read, but stays with you afterwards.
  • By only having one bird, we can really dig in with the art and writing, showing different wants to imagine or think about the bird beyond just its size and what it eats.

Are you donating to any bird causes?

Yes! We plan to donate to Minnesota-based bird charities and causes that help raise awareness for conservation, practice citizen science, and build communities around birding. We are still working out the details and researching the local organizations, but hope to be able to donate 5% of profits each year.

Do you sell to retailers and stores?

Yes! We will announce a wholesale portal to purchase directly from us after the crowdfunding campaign.
